UK Regulations on Garden Cabins
When planning to install a garden cabin, it’s important to be aware of the regulations that may apply in the UK. Generally, garden cabins and sheds are considered “permitted developments,” meaning you don’t need planning permission if you meet certain criteria. However, there are some key guidelines to follow.
Size and Height: The cabin must not exceed 2.5 meters in height if it’s within 2 meters of the property boundary. For structures further away, you can build up to 4 meters in height for a sloped roof, or 3 meters for a dual-pitched roof.
Usage: The cabin should not be used for residential purposes or sleeping accommodation. If you intend to use it as a living space, such as a garden office or studio, you may need additional permissions.
Location: The cabin must be positioned at least 1 meter from any boundary or fence if it is within the curtilage (the area around your house). You also cannot place the cabin in your front garden if it’s more than 50% of the area.
Listed Buildings: If your property is a listed building or in a conservation area, the regulations might differ, and you may need full planning permission regardless of size.
We always ensure that your new shed or garden cabin is in line with current regulations, offering advice and guidance to help you avoid any issues down the line.
